In good condition here is a copy of the famous Peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. First published by George Allen of London in 1894, this is a first reprint from March 1895. Beautifully illustrated and decorated throughout by Hugh Thomson. Peacock editions do not come up in this condition very often and are keenly sought after so I shall describe the condition in detail below. This copy has been rebacked . This means the spine has been professionally repaired by the laying of a new matching dark green cloth, with then the original spine cloth being placed back on top (see photo 2). This means the binding for this copy is now extremely tight and strong.
The contents are good with clean and tightly bound pages. With just the odd spot and the occasional brown blemish. There are a couple of very small black ink spots at the bottom of one page (not near the text). Has an inked inscription on the half-title page dated 1899 but no other writing or markings of previous ownership.
The dark green cloth covered boards have the famous gorgeous ornate gilt peacock design to the front and spine. The front is in top order, shiny and bright with just a little rubbing to the surface near the bottom and rubbing to the cloth at the corner tips. The plain dark green cloth on the rear has some rubbing which has removed the surface green in a few places but nothing major. The rebacked spine is tight and strong. The original cloth having frayed at the head and tail with a few areas of loss at the ends.
