1895, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen / The Peacock Edition / George Allen, London / In EXCELLENT Condition / Illustrated by Hugh Thomson

In excellent condition here is a copy of the famous Peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. First published by George Allen of London in 1894, this is a first reprint from March 1895. Illustrated and decorated throughout by Hugh Thomson. The best Peacock edition I have personally come across. Copies in this condition do not come up very often at all and are keenly sought after.

The contents are very good with clean and tightly bound pages. There are only a couple of spots in the entire book! Opens onto an elaborate antique book plate on the front paste down (see photos), but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The pages are gilt on all three sides which has remained shiny and bright. The book has a slight lean but this is very hard to notice, the binding is good and strong and there are no cracked hinges.

The dark green cloth covered boards have the famous gorgeous ornate gilt peacock design to the front and spine. The boards are excellent being un-faded and with no real sign of wear to report apart from a couple of very faint thin marks to the rear board. The spine is equally good with just a small lightly scuffed area at the bottom (see close-up photo). Apart from the scuff at the bottom the spine looks as beautiful as it would have when new!
