In excellent condition, here is an extremely sought-after edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. Published in 1895 by Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London. With numerous charming line drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson throughout (see photos). Thomson is well known for illustrating works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and JM Barrie. More details below.

It is these illustrations and the decorative boards in particular which make this such a collectable copy. The boards are of the same dark green and gilt style as the iconic peacock Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice covers. The Cranford design has a large floral plant in a pot behind a tray which is laid with a tea service.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. Just some mild spotting scattered through the text. The book has developed a mild lean, over time. The shiny gilt edges are pristine.

Dark green cloth over boards have the gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in top order. A couple of very faint light marks on the back - but minor. A small bump to the top front corner. Otherwise the cloth and gilt are superb and this is an extremely eye-catching book.

Your antique copy of Cranford will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
