1894 Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen / 1st Peacock Ed / George Allen, London / REBACKED - Very Good Condition / Illustrated by Hugh Thomson

In very good condition, here is a lovely copy of the famous peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Published in the peacock edition by George Allen of London between 1894 and 1906, this is one of the 1894 first editions. Beautifully illustrated and decorated throughout by Hugh Thomson. Peacock editions do not come up in this condition very often and are keenly sought after so I shall describe the condition in detail below. The main condition point with this copy is that it has been re-backed. This means the spine has been professionally repaired by the laying of a new matching dark green cloth, with then the original spine cloth being placed back on top (see photos). This means the binding for this copy is now extremely tight and strong. There are also a couple of small professional repairs to the spine near the bottom (see close-up photo). All of this is hard to spot and the decoration on the front and spine is lovely and bright, making this a very attractive copy indeed.

The contents are good, with clean and tightly bound pages. Has a pencilled inscription on the half-title page, dated 1935, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Still has the original endpapers. Also the original frontispiece tissue-guard is still in place. This has mildly tanned. All edges are shiny gilt. The bottom edge having rubbed a little on the fore-edge. The book has developed a very slight lean, over time.

The dark-green cloth covered boards have the famous gorgeous ornate gilt peacock design to the front and spine. The front is in top order, shiny and bright. It has one faint scratch to the front and a small area on the feathers where the gilt has rubbed away. The plain dark-green cloth on the rear has a couple of faint light marks. The re-backed spine is tight and strong. The original cloth having frayed at the head and tail with a few areas of loss at the ends, and the above-mentioned couple of small repairs. With a slight raised crease to the spine down the centre. Has some rubbing and rounding to the boards at the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips.
