1889 Villette by Charlotte Bronte / Smith Elder & Co London / Red Leather Three Quarter Binding / Antique Bronte Book / Some Wear to Leather

An attractive finely bound edition of Villette By Charlotte Bronte. Published in 1889 by Smith, Elder & Co., London in their "Pocket Edition" series. I would say it is actually slightly larger than pocket-sized and the dimensions are listed below. In a red leather three-quarter binding with marbled sides and endpapers and with gilt decoration. With wear to the leather spine but remaining a lovely copy. 

Inside the pages have foxing to the endpapers and then scattered spotting sporadically through the text, with the vast majority of the pages being clean and bright. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. With gilt topped pages and mild tanning and spotting to the other two edges. Has an illustrated frontispiece, otherwise unillustrated. Opens and closes with glossy marbled endpapers. 

With marbled sides in a very attractive red, olive and cream colour. With a bright red leather binding. Has some rubbing and a little surface peeling to the leather corner pieces, rubbing the surface red away in places.

The spine has five raised bands and gilt floral decoration in each compartment. With some scuffs and some rubbing to the spine ends and in one particular area in the middle next to the rear joint, where the red surface has rubbed away (see close-up photo). The binding of the spine remains very good indeed.

So, with some antique wear to the leather but remaining a very attractive edition indeed. Your copy of Charlotte Bronte's Villette will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel if desired.
