In very good condition, here is a lovely antique copy of Gardening For the South or How to Grow Vegetables and Fruits by William White. Undated but would have been published in 1868 by Orange Judd and Company, New York. With a number of diagrams.

One of the foundational 19th‑century American gardening manuals written specifically for the climate, soils, and growing conditions of the U.S. South. It is both historically important and genuinely practical, which is why it still circulates among collectors of early American horticulture.

White’s goal was to create a regionally accurate guide for Southern gardeners—something that earlier American manuals (largely written for Northern climates) failed to provide. The book covers: Vegetable gardening adapted to long, hot summers; Fruit culture for peaches, figs, grapes, melons, and other heat‑loving crops; Soil preparation and manures suited to Southern soils; Kitchen‑garden planning for year‑round productivity; Landscape and flower gardening (a smaller but notable section).

Contents: Formation and Management of Gardens in General; Soils; The Improvement of the Soil; Manures; Rotation of Crops; Hot Beds, Cold Frames and Pits; Garden Implements; Propagation of Plants; Budding and Grafting; Pruning and Training; Transplanting; Mulching, Shading and Watering; Protection From Frost; Insects and Vermin; Vegetables; Fruits.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound - some spotting to early pages, page edges and the portrait frontispiece tissue guard. With a name and date in thick black pencil to the front free endpaper. There also occasional lines or arrows in the margins to highlight a passage (see photos). A brown blemish mark to the top of a couple of pages.

Dark green cloth over boards have gilt decoration to the front, gilt titles to the spine and a blind-stamped reproduction of the front image on the back. Again in top order. The odd very light mark to the boards - but minor. And some slight rubbing to the corners and spine ends - again minor.

Your antique copy of Gardening For the South will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
