An early, scarce 1860 edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of her friend. The Life of Charlotte Bronte was initially published in 1857, with this copy coming just three years later and just five years after Bronte's early death aged 39. A highly desirable early Victorian printing. In very good condition, more details below.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with a few folded corners. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership, apart from a pencil line on the front paste down. The book opens and closes with publisher's adverts to the endpapers. Cracks open at the hinges to reveal webbing and giving the front board a mild wobble, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Unillustrated, but with a facsimile manuscript page in Bronte's hand.

Bound in the original orange boards with black titles. The black writing has rubbed and is harder to discern in places. Mild rubbing to cloth on the corner tips. Slight bump to top right front corner.

The orange on the spine has dulled in comparison to the boards. Has some rubbing at the head and tail with a few small splits to the cloth - but minor. A crease down the spine and a small split to the cloth on the front joint. The black titles have rubbed but are still readable.
