1857 Faerie Gold - Fairy Tales From the French of Savinien Lapointe - Antique Book

Here is a wonderful scarce, antique collection of fairy tales. Faerie Gold For Young and Old - From the French of Savinien Lapointe. Illustrated with eight engraved plates. Undated, but is a first edition from 1857, published by George Routledge and Sons, London. With some wear but remaining a lovely old book. Condition in detail below.

An English translation of stories originally written by the French writer Savinien Lapointe. Containing eighteen fairy tales. During the mid-Victorian era, there was a massive revival of interest in fairy tales and folklore in Britain. Publishers like Routledge capitalized on this by translating continental European contes de fées (fairy stories) to satisfy the growing market for children's literature and family reading. Chorley’s edition aimed to present Lapointe's imaginative French stories in a style that would "amuse, delight, and inform" both children ("young") and adults ("old").

Inside the book opens onto a couple of the inscriptions on the front free endpaper. Spotting to the preliminary pages. Has the occasional spot in the text along with the occasional handling mark and brown blemish. Cracked hinges to front and back to reveal webbing and giving the boards a mild wobble. Gapes at the gutter in a couple of places also but none of this effects the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges. All of the eight engraved plates are in good condition, again just the occasional mark.

Red cloth over boards have black and gilt stamped decoration to the front and spine. With some marks to the cloth - comprising a couple of light stains to the front, and some dark marks on the back. Rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends, and a little further down the spine. The black and gilt decoration remains bright.
