1855 North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell / Extremely Early Edition, Published in the Same Year and First Edition / In Very Good Condition

I'm so excited to have found this very early copy of North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is a scarce second edition copy, published in 1855, the same year as the first edition. Publisher Chapman and Hall, London. In two volumes which are in very good to near fine condition. Unillustrated. Copies of North and South do not come up very often at all, especially not early ones in such good condition.

In the original brown cloth covered boards, with blind stamped decoration to fronts, backs and spines. These are in top order with just some light rubbing. Volume II has a couple of small splits to the top spine joints (see photos). The gilt titles are shiny bright.

Inside the pages are extremely clean and bright. With some pencil inscriptions to front free endpapers and paste down but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. A couple of pages are loose at the margin at the bottom, but remain firmly attached at the top. There are a couple of small nicked edges. The main CONDITION POINT to note is gaping at the gutters meaning the pages are uneven at the edges (see photos). This is a result of how the book was first produced and cord-bound, rather than due to any later wear.
