1808 History of James the Second by Charles James Fox - Antique History Book

A fascinating 19th century historiography. Being an antique hardback copy of A History of the Early Part of the Reign of James the Second, by Right Hon. Charles James Fox. Published in 1808 by William Miller, London. Contents are in excellent condition. With some wear to the leather. But surface wear only - the binding is very good and strong. Published in the large quarto format and printed on high quality paper.

Whilst modern historians have more data than Fox did, this book remains a primary source for understanding the British political mind during the Napoleonic Wars. The book focuses heavily on the year 1685, including the death of Charles II and the failed Monmouth Rebellion.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Spotting to the early pages and then just occasionally in the text. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. Marbled endpapers and page edges. A black and white illustrated frontispiece, else unillustrated.

In a very dark-green leather binding with brown cloth to sides. These all have a good deal of rubbing, and there is some peeling away of the surface leather in places - to reveal boards beneath. A few white marks to the back. Decorative gilt decoration to the spine, which has some scuffs.
