1930 Lorna Doone by RD Blackmore - Large Illustrated Antique Book

A stunning edition, this is a large format hardback edition of Lorna Doone published in 1930 by Sampson, Low and Marston for Boots the Chemist. Designed originally as an eye-catching book to be given at Christmas. Please note the dimensions below, this is a large and impressive book.

A lavish volume with sixteen tipped-in colour plates especially prepared for this particular edition. The landscapes are beautiful and are by famous Dartmoor artist Charles E Brittan, with the figure subject plates being by the hugely collectable illustrator Charles E Brock well known for his illustration of Jane Austen's works. All of the tipped-in plates are present and are in good condition.

Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is a novel by English author Richard Doddridge Blackmore, published in 1869. It is a romance based on a group of historical characters and set in the late 17th century in Devon and Somerset, particularly around the East Lyn Valley area of Exmoor. It is the story of John Ridd, a farmer who finds love amid the religious and social turmoil of seventeenth-century England. He is just a boy when his father is slain by the Doones, a lawless clan inhabiting wild Exmoor on the border of Somerset and Devon.

Inside the book is in very good condition. The endpapers have tanned, and there is a little spotting to the endpapers. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. Fore-edge is untrimmed.

The book has stunning royal-blue decorative cloth over boards with ornate gilt decoration. Again in very good order. Has a slight indent to the front board. Mild rubbing to the corners and spine ends. The spine having tanned just ever-so-slightly in comparison to the bright front and back. Otherwise has just the odd faint mark - but minor. An eye-catching book.
