1901 A Newnham Friendship by Stronach - Art Nouveau Binding

Here is a scarce antique hardback copy of A Newnham Friendship by Alice Stronach. Published in 1901 by Blackie & Son, London. In lovely Art Nouveau decorated boards in The Glasgow School/Talwin Morris style. A novel focussing on young women's friendship in Newnham College, Cambridge University. Newnham was one of the first female colleges in the UK. Has six illustrations by Harold Copping (also known for illustrating Little Women), these are evocative of the Edwardian era. It is possible that this is a Talwin Morris design. He wasn't originally commissioned for this Blackie & Son novel, but research shows that this cover could well have been from one of his templates.

Inside the pages are tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Has some spotting and the occasional dark handling mark and brown blemish. All six black and white plates are present. The top closed edge is tinted dark brown.

Dark maroon red cloth over boards have the yellow and green Art Nouveau decoration to the front and spine, with yellow cabbage roses. With some wear. Has some rubbing and fading to the back board and around the outside edges (see photos). With a few faint marks on the back and along the front fore-edge. With a few small splits to the cloth on the spine ends.
