1898 Antique Christmas Book: The Snow Storm by Mrs Gore

In very good condition, here is a beautiful antique Christmas story. The Snow Storm by Mrs Gore. Undated, but with a prize bookplate on the front paste down dated 1898. Published by Blackie & Son, London. In a lovely binding.

The Snow Storm blends social observation with festive storytelling, typical of Gore’s “silver fork” style. Gore was a leading figure among the “silver fork” novelists, who depicted the manners and etiquette of Regency and Victorian high society. The Snow Storm reflects her interest in social dynamics, gossip, and the tensions between urban and rural life. The narrative uses the snowstorm as both a literal and symbolic device—a force that isolates characters, tests their resilience, and brings about revelations during the festive season. Like Dickens’s Christmas stories, it emphasizes community, morality, and seasonal reflection, though Gore’s tone is more satirical and society-focused.

Inside, opens onto the above-mentioned prize bookplate, but has no other writing or markings of previous ownership. With tanning to the endpapers and the odd bit of light sporadic spotting through the text. Toning and spotting to the closed outside edges. With a black and white frontispiece, else unillustrated. The book has developed a very slight lean, over time.

Bright red cloth over boards have floral decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. Again in top order. Has a small bump to the rear bottom corner, and slight rubbing to the corners and spine ends - but minor.
