In very good condition here is a first edition antique hardback historical fiction title. When London Burned A Story of Restoration Times and the Great Fire by GA Henty. Published in 1895 by Blackie and Son Ltd of London. Illustrated with twelve black and white plates by J Finnemore.
George Alfred Henty was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent. He is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century and of which this is one.
Inside the contents are in good condition. Opens onto a charming presentation bookplate on the front paste down (see photos), but otherwise there is no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has a cracked hinge at the beginning but this in no way effects the binding of the text block which is good and strong. All of the illustrated plates are present and in good condition. The edges of the pages are tinted green on all sides.
In striking dark grey/green cloth covered boards with decoration to the front and spine. The boards have stayed in good condition, clean and un-faded. With some rubbing to the cloth at the corners and at the head and tail of the spine. The gilt has remained shiny bright.
