Here is a beautifully decorated and illustrated antique copy of A Wonder Book For Girls and Boys by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Published in 1892 by Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., London and is a first in this edition. With sixty designs by Walter Crane made up of eighteen colour plates, plus decorative headers and footers.

The tales are a re-telling of Greek myths to make them more accessible for younger readers. They would become known as the Tanglewood Tales. This volume contains:

The Gorgon's Head: The story of Perseus and Medusa.
The Golden Touch: The tale of King Midas and his greed.
The Paradise of Children: A retelling of Pandora's box.
The Three Golden Apples: Heracles' quest for the golden apples of the Hesperides.
The Miraculous Pitcher: The kindness of Baucis and Philemon rewarded by the gods.
The Chimæra: Bellerophon's adventure with Pegasus and the Chimæra.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With mild spotting to the endpapers, and then occasionally scattered in the text. With decorative endpapers. Has an inscription on a blank front endpaper dated 1892, but has no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is green.

Beautifully decorative cloth covered boards have pale green and brown decoration to the front, back and spine. Has rubbing to the cloth on the corners and more particularly to the spine ends where some of the pattern has rubbed away to reveal boards beneath. Otherwise with just the odd light spot and remaining extremely eye-catching.
