1880s Christmas Books and Other Stories by Charles Dickens / A Christmas Carol etc. / Old Leather Binding / Antique Book / Colour Plates

With some wear but a strikingly atmospheric edition of Charles Dickens' Christmas Books bound with many other stories. A large format edition with a leather spine, seven colour plates and many further black line drawings on the text.

Definitely evokes the feeling of a Victorian Christmas.

The Christmas books are made up of five Christmas novellas: A Christmas Carol; The Chimes; The Cricket on the Hearth; The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man. In addition to these, this volume is also bound with A Child's History of England; American Notes and Pictures from Italy.

Inside the pages are tightly bound, all the colour plates are present as called for and in good condition. The endpapers have some mild spotting and the first two have been creased (see photos). With a couple of small pencilled names on the early endpapers, plus just a few lightly pencilled notes in the margins and to the rear endpapers - but minor. The text is in double columns.

In a black leather binding with black cloth sides. The binding has some wear and signs of age. With rubbing and chipping to the leather on the corners and spine ends, to reveal boards in places. The leather on the corner pieces and spine has some scuffs, and there is rubbing down the joints. Black cloth sides have some rubbing and there is an area of surface loss to the rear board to reveal board beneath near the bottom corner. The gilt titles and bands remain bright. The binding is very good and strong.
