1829 The Journal of a Naturalist (Knapp) / John Murray, London Second Edition / Lovely Natural History Title / Illustrated / 195 Years Old

At 195 years old here is a super antique edition of The Journal of a Naturalist. Published in 1829 by John Murray, London. Illustrated and in good condition. This is a second edition, published in the same year as the first.

Although not stated on the title page, the author is John Leonard Knapp. Writing in the style of the Gilbert White's Natural History of Selbourne, this work is considered to be a botanical companion to the more famous work. Knapp is also known for his work on British grasses which was issued in 1804.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Has a small initialled book plate on the front paste down. With spotting to the endpapers and to the seven illustrated plates at the rear of the book. There are also six wood engravings on the text. Speckled edges as published, with toning along the top.

Bound in a green leather spine with marbled papered sides. Has some rubbing to the leather corner pieces to remove the top surface in a few areas. With rubbing also and a little loss at the spine head. The outside edge of the spine has a black spotted pattern and the green colour has tanned compared to the sides. The spine has four raised bands with gilt detailing and there is a red Moroccan leather title plate. There is a little cracking just to the surface of the leather on the outside hinges and partially on the front inner hinge, but the binding on the inside remains extremely tight. With some rubbing to the marbled papered sides and a few small chips around the outside edges.
