1972 Flowers and Trees of Tudor England by Clare Putnam / Large Format 32 Beautiful Reproduced Illustrations From of 1504 Ashmole Original

Those of you who are fans of The Discovery of Witches books by Deborah Harkness will be familiar with Ashmole. Here is a beautifully illustrated, large format vintage hardback copy of Flowers and Trees of Tudor England by Clare Putnam. Published in 1972 by Hugh Evelyn Ltd. In the original dust wrapper which reads:

"MS. Ashmole 1504, in the Bodleian Library of Oxford, consists of fifty vellum leaves illuminated with a varied collection of alphabets, birds, beasts (both mythical and real), coats of arms, fantastical designs and forty-seven pages making up an ABC of plants, shrubs and trees. These are arranged two to a page with, beneath each pair, an assortment of household objects, musical instruments, buildings, landscapes, animals, flowers and insects which throw a fascinating sidelight on many aspects of the period. Some of the original pages have been stained but the thirty-two reproduced here are undoubtedly the finest of the series and outstanding examples of the illustrative art of the early sixteenth century. Together they form a catalogue of plants, most of them still familiar in the British Isles with a few which are rarely seen either cultivated or in the wild. Dr Putnam, a botanist, has written commentaries on all the plants illustrated, describing their origins, history and distribution, their herbal properties and the legends associated with them. In his introduction Dr Hassall of the Bodleian Library, describes the history and probable origins of the MS itself and the school of illumination to which it belongs."

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or other markings of previous ownership. All 32 plates are excellent.

In the original unclipped dust wrapper which has a little edge wear along the top with a couple of chipped/peel areas on the rear top edge. With a 2 cm tear down from the front top edge in the centre which has been repaired on the inside. Overall very smart.
