1948 Jane Austen The Chawton Edition Complete Six Volume Set - Vintage

An absolutely delightful, scarce Jane Austen vintage book set and one of the most attractive vintage collections of her novels produced. The Chawton Edition of the Works of Jane Austen. The complete set of six hardback books containing the completed major novels, plus some minor works. This is a first edition set from 1948 published by Allan Wingate Ltd of London. It is uncommon to find this edition in the complete six volumes.

Contains: Sense and Sensibility; Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey and The Watsons; Persuasion and Love and Freindship (Austen's spelling). These are unillustrated editions, however they have attractive illustrated title pages and chapter heading decoration (see photos). The opening volume (Pride and Prejudice) has an Introduction to the Works of Jane Austen by Richard Adlington.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a small inked inscription to the top of each front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. With some spotting to the endpapers and a few creased corners. The books have developed a mild lean over the years.

Pink cloth over boards are clean and smart with some light scuffs and scratches. Has rubbing to the corners and fraying to the cloth on a couple of the spine joints and spine ends (see photos). The turquoise title plates with gilt lettering are all in good condition.

A set which does not come up very often. Your Chawton Edition of The Works of Jane Austen will be wrapped with great care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged with tracking and insurance. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
