1921 The Arabian Nights Illustrated by Edmund Dulac : Antique Book

In very good condition, here is a lovely antique copy of Stories From The Arabian Nights Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Originally published in 1911, this is a later reprint from 1921 by Hodder & Stoughton, London. A hardback with twenty charming colour plates.

One of the landmark books of the Golden Age of Illustration. It was the first major Dulac‑illustrated edition of the tales retold by Laurence Housman, and it established Dulac as a direct rival to Arthur Rackham in the deluxe gift‑book market. The stories provide Dulac with scenes of palaces, deserts, sorcery, and nocturnal colour work—some of his most atmospheric plates.

Contents: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; The Story of the Wicked Half‑Brothers; The Princess of Deryabar; The Magic Horse; The Fisherman and the Genie; The King of the Ebony Isles.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with the occasional spot and handling mark. No writing or other markings of previous ownership. Has a crack to the front hinge giving the front board a wobble, but the binding of the text block is good and strong.

Olive-green cloth over boards have illustrated paste-down to the front board, along with ornate gold and maroon-red decoration. Gilt titles to the spine. Again in good order. Has a couple of small chips to the left edge of the front paste down. Mild rubbing to corners and spine ends. Has a 0.5 cm split at the spine head (see photos), and a little fraying at the spine head joints.
