1911 The Romaunt of the Rose attrib. Geoffrey Chaucer / Beautifully Illustrated With Twenty Colour Plates / In Very Good Condition

In very good condition, here is a beautifully illustrated antique copy of The Romaunt of the Rose - Rendered Out of the French Into English by Geoffrey Chaucer. With twenty absolutely gorgeous colour plates by Keith Henderson and Norman Wilkinson of Four Oaks (both of whom shared a studio with the artist Maxwell Armfield). Being a first edition, published in 1911 by Chatto & Windus, London.

"The Romaunt of the Rose" is a Middle English translation of the French poem "Le Roman de la Rose," traditionally attributed, as here, to Geoffrey Chaucer.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a book plate on the front paste down (with the name and address partially obscured in my photo for data protection). Also with an inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1911. With some mild spotting scattered through the text, and the occasional nicked edge or faint handling mark - but minor. With cracked hinges to the front and back, but the binding remains extremely strong and tight. All colour plates are present as called for with their original captioned tissue guards. With a small tear off one corner to one tissue, and some folds/creases in a couple more. The top closed edge is gilt. At the back of the book there is a Glossary of the Middle English language used.

Grey cloth covered boards have gilt titles to the front and spine. With some mild creasing to the cloth on the spine joints and some slight rubbing to the corners and spine ends. With a couple of faint marks to the boards and a very faint stain mark to the rear top corner, but this is hard to spot. The spine has tanned a little in comparison to the boards, with the gilt not as bright as on the front.
