The Battle of Life is a sentimental novella and the fourth of his five Christmas Books. Set in an English village built upon the blood-soaked grounds of an ancient battlefield, the story uses the physical site as a metaphor for the quiet, daily moral struggles and heartaches of human existence.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound, with no writing or markings of previous ownership. All the colour plates are present as called for. Pale-pink and grey marbled endpapers. Gilt on the top edge.

In a fine half-binding of vellum, with pale-green cloth backed boards. Again in top order. Clean and smart. The above-mentioned gilt is shiny-bright. Has a leather title plate with gilt titles.
