1901 Mansfield Park by Jane Austen / Macmillan London / Beautiful Art Nouveau Binding / 40 Charming Illustrations / Antique Extremely Scarce

One of the most distinctive and collectable bindings of any Austen edition, designed by A Turbayne. Here is a copy of Mansfield Park published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd of London in 1901. An extremely scarce and hard to get hold of edition, being one of the earliest of the illustrated versions. With 40 line drawings by Hugh Thomson which are some of the best in any edition of the Austen novels and with a full Introduction by Austin Dobson. A lovely book, in good antique condition.

Inside the contents are in very good condition with just the occasional dark handling mark. All edges are gilt and this has picked up a few faint marks and scuffs. The book has developed a mild lean over time.

With striking orange/rust brown cloth covered boards with dark brown floral Art Nouveau decoration and gilt lettering. Again in good order. With some rubbing to the cloth at the corner tips. Has rubbing also to the spine ends with a little loss of the cloth on the bottom edge (see close-up photo), and slight fraying to the top. The spine and gilt have darkened just a little in comparison to the bright front.
