An exquisitely illustrated book of children's poetry from 1896. Gabriel Setoun's verse is wonderfully brought to life in the Art Nouveau style by Charles Robinson. Published by The Bodley Head, London. A scarce book with drawings throughout in the form of fourteen full-page illustrations and numerous vignettes, headpieces and tailpieces (see photos).
Thomas Nicoll Hepburn (1861-1930) was a Scottish poet and author who wrote under the pseudonym of Gabriel Setoun. He wrote poems such as 'Jack Frost' and 'The World's Music.' This volume is a collection of his poetry for children.
Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has some light spotting to the endpapers and frontispiece tissue guard. With a name at the top of the front paste down and two more lengthy inscriptions on the verso of the front free endpaper (see photos). Shiny gilt to all edges. Has a twelve-page publisher's section of antique advertisements at the end.
Red ribbed cloth covered boards again have delightful Art Nouveau decoration to the front, back and spine. The front and back boards are in top order with just a tiny bit of rubbing to the cloth at the corner tips. The red of the spine has faded a bit in comparison to the front and back but the gilt remains bright. Has a small darkened bump three quarters of the way down the spine and there is some rubbing and a little fraying and small loss to the cloth at the head and tail. Tightly bound and square.
Your antique copy of The Child World will be wrapped with great care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to include a gift message in the parcel if desired.
H 19.5 cm x W 13 cm, 171 pages plus 12 page illustrated publisher's catalogue at the rear, 0.37 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (There are just a very few countries which I am unable to ship to).
* If you would prefer your book not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the full protective packaging, please add a note to the order.
