1886 The Chimes A Goblin Story by Charles Dickens / One of the Five Christmas Books / Chapman & Hall / Early Re-Issue of 1844 First Edition
From 1886, here is an early re-issue of the 1844 first edition of The Chimes. Published by Chapman and Hall, London in the exact same format as the very first edition. With the original illustrations and in the same red decorative binding. A lovely antique edition with a Dickensian, Victorian feel to it. Almost identical to owning a first edition copy.
The Chimes addresses the need for compassion, particularly toward the poor, and critiques the often cruel attitudes of Victorian society.
Inside the book opens onto charming antique advertisement endpapers. Has some toning along the closed top edge and mild spotting to through the text and to the fore-edge. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. The book has developed a mild lean over time.
Bright red cloth covered boards have detailed gilt decoration to the front and spine. The front board has some slight darkening around the edges. The gilt decoration on the front is still shiny and bright.
The spine has tanned in comparison to the front and the gilt dulled. With a little fraying and chips out of the cloth at the spine ends.
Your antique copy of The Chimes will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift message to the parcel if desired.
