1882 Bracebridge Hall by Washington Irving: Illustrated Antique Edition

Here is a lovely antique copy of Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, A Medley. Originally written by Washington Irving in 1821, while he lived in England, and published in 1822. This episodic novel was originally published under his pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. The tales centre on the occupants of an English manor (based on a manor near Birmingham, occupied by the Bracebridges, which Irving had visited). With a number of individual plots as a series of character sketches.

This is a beautiful hardback copy dated 1882, published by Macmillan and Co, London. With over one hundred wonderful illustrations by Randolph Caldecott (see photos). In very good condition.

The dark green cloth covered boards have delightful gilt decoration and titles to the front and spine. The green cloth has rubbed in places on the front and back, but the gilt decoration remains shiny bright and eye-catching. With a little softening to the cloth on the spine ends. Has a few faint light marks on the back - but minor.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with just the occasional spot. Richly illustrated throughout. The tissue guard to the frontispiece has tanned. With a charming inked inscription which is a gift note from a father to his daughter Ethel, dated 1886 (see photos) on an early endpaper. Has no other writing or markings of previous ownership.
