1876 Tiny Houses and Their Builders - Illustrated Antique Book

In good condition, here is an antique copy of Tiny Houses and their Builders. Undated, but would have been published in 1876 by Cassell & Company, London. Richly illustrated throughout with an illustrated frontispiece, plus twenty-six full page black and white plates. There is also a huge number of illustrations in the text. Condition in detail below.

The "tiny houses" in the title refer to nests, burrows, and natural shelters, while the "builders" are the birds themselves. For example, the text fondly profiles birds like swallows, tracking how they build their homes to rear their young before migrating south for the winter.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription to the front free endpaper dated "Xmas 1890", but no other writing or inscriptions. Gapes at the gutter in a couple of places in the centre of the book, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block, which is good and strong. All edges gilt.

In an attractive shade of blue cloth over boards. With brown, black and gilt decoration to the front and spine - and a blind stamped pattern on the back. Top and bottom boards are in super condition. Just a little rubbing to the corners. The gilt and decoration on the front have stayed lovely and bright. They have rubbed on the spine. Also with rubbing to the cloth on the spine ends, with a little loss and fraying to the cloth at the spine head (see photos).
