This is a fascinating antique reference book: A Dictionary of Dates Relating to All Ages and Nations For Universal Reference Comprehending Remarkable Occurrences Ancient and Modern. The Foundation, Laws and Governements of Countries- Their Progress in Civilisation, Industry, Literature, Arts and Science - Their Achievements in Arms - And Their Civil, Military and Religious Institutions, And Particularly The British Empire by Joseph Haydn.
Published in 1860 by Edward Moxon & Co., London.
This would have been a Victorian's answer to Google. Each entry is arranged alphabetically as in an encyclopaedia and there is a large amount of detail for each entry in addition to the dates. In remarkably good condition. The original boards have been re-laid (see photos), and this remains a hardwearing and well-bound leather hardback book. With marbled endpapers and page edges.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. There is an 8cm tear to the front marbled free endpaper up from the bottom edge. Has some chips to the edges of the opening few pages. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership.
In beautiful soft aged brown leather, with a spine which has tooled decoration and five raised bands. With gilt tooled borders, blind stamped ornate decoration in each compartment, and a black leather title plate. With some rubbing and rounding to the corners and edges and some scuffing to the leather, but a lovely aged book.
Hours of entertainment. Your antique copy of Haydn's Dictionary of Dates will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
H 22.5 cm x W 15.5 cm, 752 pages, 1.35 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. With the exception of a small number of countries.
* If you would prefer for your book not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the full protective packaging please add a note to the order.
