1846 FIRST EDITION The Battle of Life by Charles Dickens / Christmas Book / Bradbury & Evans, London / In Very Good Condition
1846 FIRST EDITION The Battle of Life by Charles Dickens / Christmas Book / Bradbury & Evans, London / In Very Good Condition
In very good condition here is an extremely bright FIRST EDITION copy of Dickens' Christmas novella The Battle of Life: A Love Story. Published in 1846 by Bradbury & Evans, London. With the fourth state engraved title page and many black and white illustrations. Has shiny gilt edged pages which are as sparkly as they would have been when published back in 1846. The only condition point to note with this copy is a small amount of loss at the very top of the spine.
The Battle of Life is the fourth in his series of "Christmas books": five short books with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s. In addition to A Christmas Carol and The Cricket on the Hearth, the Christmas Books also include The Chimes (1844) and The Haunted Man (and the Ghost's Bargain) (1848).
Inside the pages are in super condition being clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Has a thin brown blemish mark to the very last few pages, but minor and the condition really is remarkable for a book of this age.
Red ribbed cloth covered boards have shiny gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in top order with the only condition point to note being a small amount of loss to the top of the spine (see close-up photo).
Your first edition antique copy of The Battle of Life will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift message to the parcel if desired.
