1811 The Arabian Nights' Entertainments : Illustrated Antique Vols I and II of IV

I have here the first two volumes of a four volume edition of The Arabian Nights Entertainments. Published in 1811 by Mathews and Leigh of London. The year the Regency Period officially began. Illustrated and also bound by a leading London bookbinder of the time. Contents are in very good condition, with some rubbing and wear to the leather. As two from originally a set of four volumes, these two are priced to sell. More details below.

Bound in full marbled calf leather. With the label of Christian Samuel Kalthoeber - a leading émigré bookbinder. Has marbled endpapers and outside edges. The craftmanship is telling as the binding has indeed held up very well over all the years. There is a good deal of rubbing around the extremities, to reveal boards beneath in places. Rubbing also to the spine, where some of the gilt has now gone. With gilt stamped borders and dentelles.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a frontispiece copperplate engraving plus one further copperplate engraving in each volume (four in total). These are excellent (see photos). With the armorial bookplate of Charles Stewart Loch to an early blank endpaper in each volume. Loch was a prominent British social reformer. It would be fun to research him. There is a little shadowing opposite the plates.
