Here is a beautiful and scarce antique copy of A Complete Herbal by the Late James Newton. By the Late James Newton. Containing the Prints and the English Names of Several Thousand Trees, Plants, Shrubs, Flowers, Exotics etc. Engraved on 175 copper plates. Published in 1805 For Lackington, Allen & Co., London. In a fine leather binding and in excellent condition.

A purely illustrative herbal, containing 176 copper‑engraved plates depicting thousands of plants—many not found in Gerard, Johnson, or Parkinson. Depicts trees, shrubs, flowers, exotics, and other plants—several thousand species. Valued by both botanical collectors and those interested in the botanical illustrations.

Many species are not included in earlier major herbals, making it a useful comparative reference.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With an inked name on the verso of the portrait frontispiece, and also at the top of the title page. Armorial bookplate to the front paste down. With 175 copper plates, each with multiple botanical samples. (Note plates are numbered 2-176. Plate 1 was never issued. This is a known and consistent feature of all copies). Top edge is gilt.

In an olive-green leather binding with marbled papered sides and marbled endpapers. The spine has five raised bands with gilt decoration in each compartment and leather title plate. Also in very good order. Just some slight rubbing around the extremities and a little loss to the head of the spine.
