The Haunted Man by Charles Dickens / 1912, The Pears Edition of Dickens' Christmas Books / A Beautiful Antique Copy of the Christmas Novella

I was delighted to uncover this beautiful edition which is The "Pears" Centenary Edition of Charles Dickens Christmas books, published in 1912 to commemorate the centenary of Dickens' birth in 1812. With a very attractive binding and thirty monochrome illustrations by Charles Green (see photos). This copy also has super decorative Pears soap adverts on the boards and endpapers.

The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain, A Fancy for Christmas-Time is a novella by Charles Dickens first published in 1848. It is the fifth and last of Dickens's Christmas novellas. The story is more about the spirit of the holidays than about the holidays themselves, harking back to the first in the series - A Christmas Carol. 

In good condition for an antique book of this age. The main condition point to note is tanning and spotting to the endpapers and page edges. After the endpapers the contents are clean, bright and tightly bound with just the occasional small dark mark. Has a faint name pencilled on the half-title page (see final close-up photo), otherwise no other writing or markings of previous ownership.

The dark racing green cloth covered boards are wonderfully evocative. With "Pears" portrait paste down in the centre, black decorative border and gilt titles. All in top order. Has a couple of very faint marks on the front. A little rubbing to the corners and spine ends and a couple of small splits and some loss to the dark green cloth surface at the head of the spine.
