1971 Dear Jane - A Biographical Study of Jane Austen by Constance Pilgrim - Vintage Book

In excellent condition, here is a vintage hardback copy of Dear Jane - A Biographical Study of Jane Austen. By Constance Pilgrim. Being a first edition, published in 1971 by William Kimber, London. In the original dust wrapper, which reads:

"...Mrs Pilgrim sets out to explore the facts and possibilities surrounding the one serious love affair which Jane Austen is known to have had and which hitherto in the words of her niece has been 'nameless and dateless'......While on holiday in the West Country, Jane and her sister met a gentleman who much admired Jane and he was expected to come to their home but instead news was brought of his death.....Critics have hitherto presumed the affair to have had little importance in Jane's life. But was this in fact a far more serious and long-standing affair which was to have great relevance to her work? Mrs Pilgrim in a book which will enthral all admirers of Jane Austen's novels puts forward this thesis. Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. No writing or markings of previous ownership. Faint spotting along top edge. One black and white photo, else unillustrated.

The unclipped dust wrapper is also in very good order. It has a crease on the back, and has faded a bit on the spine. The odd faint dark mark - but minor. With a little chipping to the spine ends.
