Here is a charming vintage hardback copy of The Darling Buds of May by HE Bates. This much-loved novel was first published in 1958 by Michael Joseph. It was televised in the early 1990s in a series which shot Catherine Zeta-Jones to fame. This copy is a Book Club edition from the same year as the Joseph first edition, 1958. With the original dust wrapper, which reads:

"The Larkins, with their passion for eating and drinking, dodging taxes, making love and drawing up their own peculiar and uninhibited moral code, face life as many of us would like to face it if we dared - richly, robustly and with no single thought for the consequences of tomorrow."

Inside the pages are tightly bound with no writing or other markings of previous ownership. Has the odd faint blemish and the odd spot on the edges. This is an unillustrated edition.

In the original delightful dust jacket. This has a few nicks and tears which have been stabilised on the reverse side (see final photo), and are hard to spot from the outside. With some rubbing, chips and small areas of loss to the corners and spine ends. The back of the jacket has a few faint brown marks. The unclipped wrapper has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable archival plastic sleeve, and looks very presentable.
