1928 The Watsons by Jane Austen / Vintage Copy of Her Unfinished Novel

In very good condition here is a vintage hardback first edition copy of The Watsons by Jane Austen. Published in 1928 by Elkin Mathews & Marrot Ltd, London. Condition in detail below.

The Watsons is an unfinished novel of five chapters, often known as a fragment of a novel. She began writing it around 1803 and probably abandoned it after her father's death in January 1805. However, it was not published until 1871, as part of James Edward Austen-Leigh's Memoir. Jane Austen had left the manuscript untitled, the title of "The Watsons" was provided by Austen-Leigh.

This edition is the original work continued and completed by her Great Grand-Niece Edith and also Francis Brown.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. They have mild spotting scattered through the text, and to the closed outside edges. With an inked name, dated 1932 to the front free endpaper, but no other inscriptions or markings of previous ownership.

Grey papered boards have blue decoration and titles. With a petrol blue cloth spine and gilt titles. The titles on the spine have dulled and are now hard to discern. The papered boards are clean and bright with just a couple of faint marks and scuffs - but minor. Has rubbing to the paper on the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips. A little rubbing also to the cloth on the spine ends where there is some fraying at the head and tail (see photos). The spine colour has tanned a little on the outer edge, and with a couple of tiny light marks. Overall a very presentable tight and square book.
