A super vintage copy of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, published in 1924 by Hodder & Stoughton, London. With twelve wonderful tipped-in colour plates plus line drawings and decoration by Kay Nielsen (see photos). From the high Golden Age of Illustration, this is one of the best illustrated copies of the Fairy Tales ever produced. A large-format hardback this copy has been re-cased and is in good condition.
Tales included in this volume are: The Tinder Box; Great Claus and Little Claus; The Real Princess; The Hardy Tin Soldier; The Flying Trunk; Ole Luke-Oie; The Swineherd; The Nightingale; The Snow Queen; The Red Shoes; The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper; The Shadow; The Shirt Collar; The Bottle-Neck; The Elder Tree Mother; The Story of a Mother.
Inside the pages are are clean and tightly bound. With scattered light spotting through the text and toning along the closed top edge. A couple of pages have a small closed tear up from the bottom edge, nowhere near the bottom of the text. All of the twelve delightful colour plates are present as called for, with their captioned tissue guards. In addition to the colour plates there are also black line drawn illustrations and chapter decorations throughout. Re-cased but still keeping the original endpapers.
Bound in pale blue moiré silk with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. In good condition, with some mild bumping around the outside edges. Has some slight bumping and rounding to the corners. The gilt is shiny bright on the front and has rubbed a little on the spine in comparison.
