In very good condition, here is a large antique hardback copy of The Horse in Magic and Myth by M Oldfield Howey. Being a first edition, published in 1923 by William Rider & Son, Ltd of London. Richly illustrated in black and white throughout, and with a colour frontispiece. Condition in detail below.

Contents: Fairy Horses; Angel Horses; Ghostly Horses; The Demon Horse; The Headless Phantom Horse; The Saxon Horse; The Trojan Horse; The Hobby Horse; The Hooden Horse; The Bridal Horse; The Horse Shoe; The Corn Horse; Sun Horses; The Moon Horse; The Wind Horse; Sea Horses; The Night Horse; The Horse in Charm and Incantation; The Prophetic Horse; The Symbolic Horse; Witches, Fairies and Horses; The Gods and Patron Saints of Horses; The Sacrifical Horse; Other Scared Horses; The Horse Loosed; The Funeral Horse; The Horse and Metempsychosis; The Horse in Creation Myths; The Moral and Legal Responsibility of the Horse; Lucky and Unlucky Colouration of Horses; Centaurs, Hyppogryphs and Unicorns.

One of the most comprehensive explorations of the horse's prominent place in global folklore and mythology. Howey meticulously traces how different civilisations viewed the horse—not just as a beast of burden, but as a sacred, magical creature bridging the human world with the supernatural. From the terrifying folklore of the Scottish Kelpie and the haunting nightmare to the celestial sun-chariots of Greece and Norse mythology. Capturing the deep spiritual bond between humans and horses.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a large ex libris bookplate to the front paste down, but no other markings of previous ownership. With a fold/crease to a blank front and rear endpaper. Some toning along the closed top edge. Tanning to endpapers. A few of the pages have rough fore-edges where they have been opened (see photos), and several of the pages have never been cut open at all! So the book has been little read.

Red cloth over boards have gilt decoration to the front and gilt titles to spine. All in top order. A little rubbing to the red along the bottom edge - but minor. Mild rubbing also to spine ends.

Your antique copy of The Horse in Magic and Myth will arrive wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
