1912 Early Impression of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett - Colour Illustrated Vintage Book

Here is an opportunity to obtain a very early impression of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic The Secret Garden. The first edition was published in October, 1911. This is a second impression from just a few months later in January 1912. This copy has been re-bound in a more modern binding (whilst keeping some of the original title page in the front centre). It is priced accordingly, and so is a good chance for the collector to obtain a scarce edition (which would normally sell for between £350 and £500 in the original binding).

With eight delightful colour plates by the revered Art Nouveau illustrator Charles Robinson (see photos).

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With occasional spotting. Has some chipping to the top corners of the opening handful of pages (see close-ups), but nowhere near the text. With an inked gift-inscription from the original year of publication to the half-title page, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has a vintage stamp on the other side of this leaf, featuring a very young Queen Elizabeth II. All eight colour plates are present as called for, and in very good condition. The top closed edge is tinted green.

In very smart, clean, green cloth over boards with gilt titles to spine, and some of the original illustrated front cloth from the 1912 copy paste down onto the front. A nice touch! All in top order. Squarely and tightly bound - having kept the original illustrated endpapers at the front (but new endpapers to the back).
