1910s Decorative Literature Set in Two Volumes / Silas Marner by George Eliot, and Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell / Illustrated / Antique

In good condition, here are two lovely decorative novels in the same series. Sold together as a matching set of two. Comprising Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell, and Silas Marner by George Eliot. Undated but would have been published in the early 1910s by Collins Clear-Type Press, London. Each has four black and white illustrated plates.

Inside Mary Barton has an inked name on the front free endpaper, and the reverse of the frontispiece. Silas Marner has a prize bookplate on the front paste down, and the remnants of another bookplate on the rear paste down. Otherwise pages are clean and smart, with just occasional spotting. Silas Marner has illustrated endpapers. Mary Barton has a decorative title page.

Both with decorations to the fronts and spines, and gilt titles. Mary Barton has a little rubbing to the front board, and a thin scratch on the back. Silas Marner has a little fading in a few small areas on the front, and some faint red staining to the fore-edge (see photos). Overall both are uniformly bright, tight and square, with shiny gilt titles. An eye-catching set.
