1904 Christmas Books by Charles Dickens: Art Nouveau Decorated Boards, Illustrated

A striking antique edition of the five Charles Dickens Christmas Books published in 1904 by The Gresham Publishing Company, London. Known as The Imperial Edition, with charming Art Nouveau design and with eight black and white illustrations by CA Shepperson (see photos).

Charles Dickens wrote a number of short stories and novellas concerning Christmas. Here is a selection of five of his most famous works known collectively as The Christmas Books. Containing: A Christmas Carol; The Chimes; The Cricket On The Hearth; The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with spotting to the endpapers and frontispiece illustration. A few folded corner tips. Has a cracked hinge at the beginning, giving the front board a mild wobble, but the binding remains tight and strong. With an inked name and date at the top of the half-title page, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All eight black and white illustrations are present, and they all have a tissue guard still in place. The top edge is gilt.

In striking bright red cloth over boards with gilt Art Nouveau decoration. Again in very good order. The front board is clean and smart. With some light bumping to the top edges - but minor. The rear board has some slight rubbing to the red cloth next to the spine. Mild rubbing to the spine ends and slight dulling of the gilt on the spine in comparison to the front, but again minor. Overall a very smart antique edition.
