A beautiful antique illustrated book, here is a copy of Penelope's Experiences in Scotland Being Extracts From the Commonplace Book of Penelope Hamilton by Kate Douglas Wiggin. Charmingly illustrated by the renowned artist CE Brock and was published by Gay and Bird of London in 1901. Very attractively bound in olive-green cloth with ornate gold decoration and with gilt edges on all edges.

Being a collection of fictional tales set in Victorian Scotland by Kate Douglas Wiggin the American educator and author of children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labour. She also wrote Penelope's Experiences of England and also Ireland, the latter of which I also have in stock at time of listing.

Inside the contents are in very good condition. With no marks or writing. The gilt edges are shiny and bright, with the top edge having dulled a little with a few light scuffs. With over fifty charming illustrations by Brock (see photos) who is also known for his drawings in the Macmillan Jane Austen books.

With very attractive olive-green cloth covered boards which have ornate rose and thistle gilt decoration to the front and spine. Having kept a good un-faded colour and with shiny gilt. Has some light marks on the back board and some very slight rubbing to the cloth at the spine ends.
