1899 Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell / Smith, Elder & Co., London / Four Illustrations / Scarce Antique Edition / 125 Years Old

Here is a scarce copy of Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. Published in 1899 as a volume in the seven volume set "Novels and Tales of Mrs Gaskell". In the original dark green cloth covered boards with black and gilt decoration. Has four black and white illustrations. This copy is 125 years old and so inevitably has some condition points to note, detailed below, but remains a super, attractive edition.

Inside, lacks the front brown free endpaper and so opens directly onto the half-title page. The main condition point with this copy is fairly heavy foxing to the four illustrations and to the page edges (see photos). Has a cracked hinge at the beginning giving the front board a mild wobble but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The book has developed a lean over time.

The dark green boards remain very attractive, with black and gilt decoration, and they have a real Victorian feel about them. They are sturdy, clean and un-faded with just a couple of faint light marks.
