An antique copy of Ormond - A Tale by Maria Edgeworth. In a beautifully decorated Art Nouveau binding by Albert Angus Turbayne and illustrated by Carl Schlosser. Published in 1895 by Macmillan and Co., London, being a first thus in this edition. With some wear to the boards - detailed below.
Maria Edgeworth was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe.
Inside the pages are very good being clean, bright and tightly bound. Mild tanning and spotting to the frontispiece tissue guard. With an inked name to the top of the front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Opens onto yellow peacock Art Nouveau endpapers also by Turbayne. Gilt to all three sides, with a few light scuffs to the top edge. Has forty charming line-drawn illustrations by Carl Schlosser.
Dark green cloth over boards have ornate gilt to the front and spine. Rubbing and rounding to the corners and spine ends. The rear board has a small nick to the cloth on the top edge, a mild bump to the fore-edge and some light scratches to the surface. The gilt decoration to front and spine has dulled and rubbed a little but still looks extremely eye-catching on display.
