In good condition here is a copy of the famous Peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. First published by George Allen of London in 1894, this is a first reprint from March 1895. Beautifully illustrated and decorated throughout by Hugh Thomson. With a few minor condition points to note but overall and lovely copy. Peacock editions do not come up in this condition very often and are keenly sought after so I shall describe the condition in detail.
The contents are good with clean and tightly bound pages. With just the odd mark and one folded corner with the vast majority of pages being excellent. Has a contemporary neatly inked name and a booksellers stamp on the verso of the front free endpaper, with a couple of small pencil notations here also (see photos). The main condition point with the contents is a small hole on page 115 where it has become stuck to page 117 and then separated (see close-up photo). The pages are gilt on all three sides which has dulled slightly along the top with a faint scuff and remains shiny and bright to the other two sides. The binding is good and strong with no cracked hinges.
The dark green cloth covered boards have the famous gorgeous ornate gilt peacock design to the front and spine. The boards are also good being un-faded with bright shiny gilt. The boards have some slight rounding and rubbing to reveal boards at just the very tips. There are a couple of very shallow bumps along the top edges (see photos). The rear board is plain dark green cloth and this has a light stain mark to the lower half and a couple of thin scratches. There is some rubbing to the extremities of the spine cloth to cause some small splits at the head and tail and a couple of tiny holes in the spine joint with the back board.
