1891 Christmas Books Including A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens / Chapman & Hall, London / Lovely Antique Book / Plus Hard Times

A lovely antique version of Charles Dickens' five Christmas books plus the novel Hard Times. Published in 1891 by Chapman & Hall, London making this copy 133 years old. With sixty-seven black and white illustrations and in good condition.

The five Christmas Books are: A Christmas Carol; The Chimes; The Cricket and the Hearth; The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man. 

Inside the pages are tightly bound with no writing or other markings of previous ownership. Has some spotting to the endpapers and page edges and then scattered spotting in the text with the occasional brown blemish. A number of pages towards the end of the book are still uncut along the top edge. I have left them like this so the new owner can enjoy cutting them open as the original readers would have done all those years ago They can be opened using the edge of a credit card, letter opener etc. One corner on the advertisement page at the beginning of the book has a tear across (see final photo). 

Dark red cloth covered boards have a gilt stamped crown in the centre of the front board, and gilt titles to the spine. The boards have kept a good deep red colour with just the occasional light rubbing or scuff-but minor. The spine has tanned a little in comparison to the front and back. The gilt titles remain bright.

A lovely, tight and square antique edition.
