1877 Two Anthony Trollope Novels / The Bertrams and Miss Mackenzie / Chapman & Hall, London / Both Early, Victorian Yellowbacks

I'm pleased with this find of two Victorian novels by Anthony Trollope. The Bertrams and Miss Mackenzie. The Bertrams was published in 1877 by Chapman and Hall, London. It would have been one in a series known as "yellowbacks", the equivalent of our airport fiction, they were bright and colourful and designed to catch the eye in the newly emerging railway stations. Miss Mackenzie, by the same publisher, is undated but would have been a very similar time. Yellowbacks is an umbrella term - a number of the original novels had yellow boards/spines, these are not yellow but would have been designed for the same purpose with bright colourful glazed boards. Not designed specifically for longevity, they often have not survived well. So when they do come up they are sought after by collectors. These two are in very good condition inside, with some wear to the boards and spines.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Miss Mackenzie has just a few pages loose at the bottom, but still firmly attached at the top. It also has a few pages with some nicks to the fore-edge. The Bertrams has a few faint pencil lines in the margins, but not too many, and nothing too obtrusive. Otherwise no other writing or markings of previous ownership. These are unillustrated editions.

Both books have rubbing and chipping to the paper on the edges, corners and spine joints. To reveal boards beneath in places, especially at the corners. Also to reveal webbing on the spine. Miss Mackenzie has the more rubbing, both to the surface illustration and rear board. Also to the spine where there is some chipping, creasing to the paper and some fraying to the spine ends.
