Here are three large leather bound volumes of The Plays of Shakespeare, in The Cassell's Illustrated Edition. Undated, but would have been published around the 1870s by Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London. Richly illustrated throughout.
The three volumes are divided into the Comedies, Tragedies and Histories. PLEASE NOTE the contents pages are not correct for this binding. There are some plays listed which have not been included in this version.
The plays included are: Merry Wives of Windsor; Comedy of Errors; Merchant of Venice; As You Like It; Taming of the Shrew; All's Well That Ends Well; Twelfth Night; A Winter's Tale; King John; Richard II; Henry IV Parts I and II; Henry V; Richard III; Henry VIII; Troilus and Cressida; Coriolanus; Julius Caesar; Macbeth; Hamlet; King Lear; Othello; Antony and Cleopatra; Cymbeline; Pericles.
The plays which are listed in the Contents, but are not included in this edition are: The Tempest; Two Gentlemen of Verona; Much Ado About Nothing; Love's Labours Lost; A Midsummer Night's Dream; Henry VI Parts I, II, III; Romeo and Juliet; Timon of Athens.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a name on an early endpaper of each volume, a little spotting to the endpapers and some to the page edges, otherwise very good indeed. The large illustrations are superb and there are many for each play.
In a leather binding with marbled papered sides. With rubbing to the leather corner pieces where some of the surface leather has peeled away in places. The spines have five raised bands with gilt tooling and black Moroccan leather title plates. Again with some rubbing and scuffing but this adds character to these striking and impressive antique volumes. The bindings are tight and strong.
