Here is an antique first edition copy of The Vicar of Bullhampton by Anthony Trollope. Published in 1870 by Bradbury, Evans & Co., London. With thirty charming line-drawn illustrations comprising twenty-three full-page plates, and seven in-text.

The Vicar of Bullhampton is one of Trollope’s more socially conscious novels. It follows Frank Fenwick, the broad-minded vicar of a Wiltshire parish, as he navigates village politics, moral dilemmas, and tangled romances.

Inside opens onto marbled endpapers, and the page edges are also marbled. With the remains of some erased pencil inscriptions to the endpapers. A few of the pages have some light brown tanning and staining (see photos), otherwise just the occasional spot and folded corner. Some pages near the beginning have a nick to the fore-edge.

In a black leather binding with black cloth over boards to the sides. Has rubbing away of the black surface leather at the corners to reveal boards beneath at the tips. With some chips in the leather at the spine ends and joints, and a small split at the front head of spine. Has five raised bands on the spine and a dark red leather title plate. The gilt on the bands and spine ends has rubbed in places. With a little rubbing also to the cloth on the boards, with again a small area of board revealed on the front. The binding is very tight and strong.
