This is a fabulous copy of John Bunyan's Pilgrims' Progress From This World To That Which is Come. Published in 1861 by Routledge, Warne and Routledge of London. A large-format, richly illustrated edition with one hundred and ten dramatic engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. The binding is in unusual and lovely lilac and heather colours, with gilt edged pages. It is 162 years old and so inevitably has a bit of wear but remains a stunning version of the classic tale.
Inside the pages are tightly bound and have not been written in. There is spotting and brown blemishes sporadically through the text, with some pages having a fair amount of tanning or spotting, and others none at all. With the odd folded/creased corner. Has a partially cracked hinge at the back, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block. Has a portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. All three edges are shiny gilt. The book has developed a lean over time.
Lilac cloth covered boards have beautiful ornate raised decoration to the front, back and spine and bevelled edges. With rubbing to the cloth at the corners to reveal boards beneath and a little rubbing to the cloth at the spine ends where there are a few very small splits to the cloth. Has a faint light brown stain on the back board next to the fore-edge. Otherwise absolutely lovely, with the gilt on the spine having faded just a bit in comparison to the bright front and back.
