c1911 Granny's Wonderful Chair and Its Tales of Fairy Times by Frances Browne / SW Partridge & Co., Ltd London / Six Black and White Illustrations

In good condition, here is a lovely antique copy of Granny's Wonderful Chair and Its Tales of Fairy Times by Frances Browne. Undated but with a prize bookplate from 1911 on the front paste down. With six black and white illustrations and with gorgeous Art Nouveau design to the boards.

Originally written in the mid-19th century, the story follows Snowflower, a kind-hearted girl who lives with her grandmother, Dame Frostyface. When Dame Frostyface embarks on a journey, she leaves Snowflower with their enchanted chair, which has the magical ability to tell stories and transport her on adventures.

Frances Browne, who was blind from infancy, had an extraordinary ability to create vivid imagery in her writing despite never having seen the world herself.

Inside the pages have tanned, but are otherwise clean and tightly bound. Has the above-mentioned prize book plate, plus also a name on the front free endpaper. Cracks open at the hinge near the end of the book (see final photo), but the binding of the text block is good and strong.

The red boards are also clean and smart. Has a slight bump to the top front corner. The colours of the spine has faded a bit in comparison with the front, but the gilt titles are still shiny. With a small bump also on the top edge of the rear board.
